Nylon vs. Leather Collars

I had to replace my CeCe’s collar because my other cat Benny stretched it out (he and CeCe had a little spat). This collar was very cute. It was pink and was filled with rhinestones and suited CeCe well. Needless to say the collar had to be replaced. Unfortunately, I had a specific collar in mind. I wanted it to be pink or purple with little studs or rhinestones and to be leather (fake leather). Trying to find a “cute” cat collar seemed impossible. Luckily, I found one. Finding cat accessories can seem like finding a needle in a haystack!

It’s interesting that cat collars are mostly nylon which can rip, snag, and tear. I prefer leather because it’s durable and looks good. There are many leather collars for dogs but not many for cats. The ones that were leather were plain which is all right, but I wanted one with a little flash. Finding cat accessories such as a collar was becoming like a scavenger hunt.

Petco and PetSmart are the most popular stores to find cat accessories. They have a good selection of cat accessories, but the collars tend to be nylon. The styles and colors are all right, but they could be better. The most popular nylon collar is the break-away (safety) collar. Unfortunately, there’s no place to put the license tag. You’d have to buy a “ring” (think key ring) and put the license on that. The only problem is it may not be secure enough to hold the license tag.

Leather collars are durable and have a place for the license tag. The collar won’t rip, tear, or snag. It will not break away or come off your cat unless there’s a lot of tugging and pulling involved. This is why it’s best to keep your cat indoors. You can buy cat accessories to keep you cat occupied. Buy a “fish on a stick” so your cat can play and keep out of trouble.

If you’re concerned that a leather collar doesn’t break away, go with the nylon collar. Make sure to keep your cat indoors for his/her safety and protection. The weather can be detrimental to your cat’s health. If you live in AZ, the temperatures can reach 120 degrees!

Remember your cat has fur, you don’t. Keep your cat cool by keeping him indoors. A cat accessory such as a kitty condo will allow your cat to look out the window; he’ll have a great view!

To tell if your cat needs a new collar put two fingers underneath it; if you can’t then it’s time for a new collar. Whatever collar you choose for your cat, make sure it’s the right one for your cat. If you feel more secure with a break-away collar then purchase one from Petco or PetSmart. If you prefer leather see what’s in stock. The main thing is to make sure your cat is comfortable. Of course, there’s nothing wrong about putting your best “paw” forward when it comes to cat accessories like a collar!
