Black cat breeds can be overlooked at shelters throughout the United States; they are usually adopted last. The difference between black cats and other cats is the color of their fur, it’s black. These cats need and deserve loving homes, but they’re discriminated against because of the color of their fur. It’s the same as discriminating against a person because of their skin color. It’s time to stop judging and start loving these cats.

Thanks to centuries old myths and legends, black cat breeds are seen as evil because it was believed they were a witch’s familiar. Apparently, a black cat (familiar) could do a witch’s bidding. It was also believed that a witch could take the shape of their familiar so they could travel unnoticed. This could come in handy in the 21st century!

Black cat breeds are not popular in many states. Shelters usually have a couple of black cats that wait for homes. The reason black cat breeds are not popular is because of a state’s culture. Black cats can be seen as wicked or evil. This is not true. They are just as lovable as a Calico cat!

Wikipedia: There’s a stigma attached to black cats such as anarchism which means “encompassing theories and attitudes which consider the state, as compulsory government, to be unnecessary, harmful, and/or undesirable, and favors the absence of the state (anarchy).” It’s not a black cat’s fault that a group of people used it as a symbol.

Black cat breeds that are overlooked in shelters can wait for months before they’re adopted. They make great pets and have so much love to give and are waiting to give it freely without any attachments. Give them a chance and you’ll have a friend for life!

Instead of judging a black cat by the color of its fur, spend time with one in an adoption room at your local shelter or Humane Society. You’ll see his personality shine through and it will melt your heart. Watch as he romps and plays in the kitty condo. Before you know it, he’ll be brushing against you, showering you with affection. It will be an experience like none other.

Get over the fear and stigma of black cat breeds and adopt one or two today! They are just as lovable as the orange and white Tabby cat you may want to adopt. Give a black cat a second chance at a loving home today and tomorrow you’ll have a companion for life!
